  Roberta Joan Mitchell 原姓Anderson，于1943年11月7日出生在加拿大艾伯塔省的麦克劳德堡，是一位加拿大和美国双国籍的创作型歌手、多乐器演奏家和画家。她九岁时曾患小儿麻痹症, 在十一岁时她随家庭迁居至加拿大萨斯喀彻温省的萨斯卡通市。在这儿Joni 的校园生活并不顺利，她最大的兴趣爱好是绘画，在校期间短暂的学习过古典钢琴然后逐渐发掘并专注于自身的创作天赋，也是在那时她第一次考虑从事歌唱事业，但由于多种原因她曾辍学一学年与一群喧闹的年轻人混迹于市中心，直至她意识到自己快与犯罪相差不远后及时脱身重返校园。

  Joni 想学习吉他，由于她的母亲将吉他与乡村音乐联系起来并认为它与乡巴佬文化有所关联所以表示反对，她最终选择了尤克里里，但是Joni 还是通过一本Pete Seeger 的歌曲集自学了吉他。小儿麻痹症使她的左手变得虚弱，因此她发明了特殊的调弦方法来弥补，之后她运用这些调弦方法，在歌曲创作中创造出非标准的和声和结构。从萨斯卡通的高中毕业后，米切尔在萨斯卡通技术学院跟随抽象表现主义画家Henry Bonli 学习艺术，并于1963学年离开家乡前往卡尔加里的阿尔伯塔艺术学院就读。她对学院过分重视技术技巧而忽视自由创作感到失望，并觉得自己与当时盛行的纯粹抽象艺术和商业艺术潮流格格不入。Joni 在20岁时由于意外怀孕，她在一年后彻底退学并开始在加拿大的夜总会演奏，至此她正式加入歌唱行业。

  《Turbulent Indigo》于1993年创作至1994年释出，是Joni 职业生涯晚期的最佳专辑。专辑封面是她扮成梵高模样的自画像，展现出她想天马行空的创作才情又表达了对当时美国社会的精妙讽刺; 这位女士在十首歌曲中谈论了，女性权利、社会达尔文主义、资本主义、医疗保障、枪械管控、帮派暴力、全球变暖、消费主义、艾滋病、精神疾病、宗教无用等等问题，而这一切又都映射到自画像上那割去的右耳, 那直视人心的眼神, 那似有若无的气息, 那动荡的靛蓝，毫无疑问的天才之作! 在此之外，十首歌曲中却都潜藏着希望, 揭开旋律的皮面会发现骨中是浪漫作髓，也许这就是《Turbulent Indigo》这张专辑在1996年的格莱美击败《Bedtime Stories》– Madonna, 《Daydream》– Mariah Carey, 《Hell Freezes Over》– The Eagles,《The Woman in Me》– Shania Twain，成功拿到最佳流行专辑奖的原因。

  Joni 几乎所有用吉他创作的歌曲都采用了开放式调弦，也就是非标准调弦；她用大约50种不同的调弦方式创作歌曲，演奏她所谓的“琼尼的怪异和弦”。使用另类调弦可以让吉他手创作出更加丰富多样、层次分明的伴奏。多年来，她的右手拨弦/扫弦技巧不断演变，从最初首张专辑中吉他歌曲所体现的复杂拨弦风格，发展成一种更加自由、更有节奏感的风格，有时还会加入打击乐般的“拍击”技巧。在《Turbulent Indigo》这样涉猎多种风格的专辑中Joni 的吉他技巧展示得淋漓尽致，每一次触弦, 每一手转换, 每一下拍击都使音乐激发更耀眼的心灵火花。
